The Best Materials for Fence Durability

IMG_0234Having a fence built around your home is a serious investment. You want to be sure that your fence can handle the challenges it will face on a daily basis. For a structure that will last for years to come, consider the relative fence durability of these common building materials.

Metal Fences

When it comes to strength, metal fences are typically a good choice. The heavy strength of a wrought iron fence will stand up to the toughest physical challenges and is great if you’re concerned about security. However, iron can be vulnerable to weathering and rust, lessening its overall durability somewhat. Aluminum is another attractive option. Lighter than iron, it is more resistant to weathering and extremely good against corrosion. But it bends easily, meaning that a direct impact will likely leave it damaged. The familiar and economical chain link fence is something of a middle ground when it comes to metal fence durability. Although not as physically robust as iron, it is more impact-resistant than aluminum and holds up well to the elements.

Wood Vs. Vinyl

Wood and vinyl are two more popular fencing options. Of these two, vinyl is generally considered more durable. Reliable and low-maintenance, vinyl fencing is known to last for over ten years. Wood, although beautiful and classic, is prone to rot and insect damage. However, pressure-treated and well-kept wood can be quite tough. Wood is also easier and cheaper to repair should damage occur and stands up better to direct impacts than vinyl.

Comparing fence durability can be tricky, as you’ll need to consider the types of stress your fence will be exposed to. If you live in a climate with lots of rain or harsh winters, you may want to consider a more weather-resistant building material. However, if you live in a busy area or need a fence for security reasons, a more impact-resistant material is probably right for you.
